Bye Bye Becky

Becky McDonald has lived on the nation’s favourite street for the past five years, but now it is time to say good bye. Corrie fans have followed her through all her highs and lows but either way they have stuck by her through thick and thin. She started in the show as a bit of a villain, but very quickly won our hearts.

Actress Katherine Kelly  has left her alter ego behind and is now preforming at the National Theatre as Kate, in She Stoops to Conquer (directed by Jamie Lloyd.) Kate is the daughter of a wealthy man that plans to seek marriage for his daughter. The stage show started on the 24th of January, just a day after she left the cobbles of Coronation Street.

Katherine Kelly told the BBC, “I’ve been at the National now for six weeks now and I still don’t know where I’m going! It really is the rabbit warren of all rabbit warrens, I tell you.”

This isn’t the first time Katherine Kelly has performed on the stage, she was the leading lady at the Royal Shakespeare Company before she landed her part in Coronation Street.

So will Becky return to the street? After a dramatic showdown with her ex Steve McDonald and his new wife Tracy, Becky proved to the street that she didn’t kill Tracy’s twins by pushing her down the stairs. At their wedding reception Becky gave Steve her wedding present, a set of Tracy’s doctor’s records showing the day of her miscarriage and the day of the fall. Once she had proved herself to the street she jetted of too sunny Barbados with her new man and his little boy, Bobby.

At the NTA’s Katherine won the Serial Drama Performance Award for her time as Becky. She was otherwise occupied though with her new stage play so her co-stars Paula Lane and Ryan Thomas accepted the award on her behalf. Paula Lane, who plays  Becky’s stepsister in the show, Kylie Platt, read out a speech that Katherine had written explaining how much she had loved her time on the show and then went on to say thank you and goodbye to all her co-stars.

Taking on such a different role proves that Katherine is an extremely talented actress and one of a kind. We wish her all the look in the future and hope she returns to the streets one day.
